Early career teachers Gemma and David share how regular mentoring and practical feedback has helped them tackle challenges, build confidence and make progress in the classroom.
Starting out as a teacher brings excitement and challenge in equal measure. Watch this video to find out how Gemma and David have benefited from regular, focused support from a mentor on our Early Career Training Programme.
David shares how weekly meetings with his mentor provide a safe space to talk openly about his lessons, work through problems and plan next steps.
“Every week we come together and talk about what’s been going on within lessons. If I’ve got any issues and problems, we see how we can work on that together,” he explains.
Gemma describes how her mentor, Lisa, helps her see what’s going well, models new techniques and helps her plan how to use them.
“She’d give really detailed feedback where I needed to improve and what I’d already done well. She’d model that to me, help me come up with a really precise plan and how to implement those different things into my lessons really well.”
This cycle of observation, feedback and support gives early career teachers the time and space to practise, reflect and improve.
