Course overview
Becoming an English teacher with Ambition
On our Teacher Training programme, you can train to become an English teacher in school. You can become a qualified English teacher in one year, gaining both a QTS and PGCE.
You’ll train to teach in school, allowing you to train on the job and apply the theory you learn immediately. By the end of your training, you’ll have the confidence to teach in a classroom independently and stand a great chance of securing a permanent role.
Why is teaching English so important?
English combines the disciplines of English language and literature and is a key part of every child’s education. A report from Ofsted highlighted English as fundamental to a pupil’s educational success. It’s a subject that helps pupils learn how to communicate, develop empathy and make sense of the world around them.
How you'll learn
What will my training look like as an English teacher?
You’ll learn through a combination of:
- weekly self-guided learning
- face-to-face sessions
- online sessions with other trainees
These sessions are paced and structured to give you the opportunity to take a complex area of teaching and unpick it with the help of education experts. You will have the support and opportunity to develop key teaching techniques as well as building your confidence in teaching maths.
You’ll also have plenty of opportunities to observe other physics and science teachers in the classroom. This allows you to see great teaching in action and better understand what key teaching principles look like before putting them into practice yourself.
What you'll learn
What might you be teaching?
As a secondary English teacher, you’ll teach a whole range of topics covered by the national curriculum. This might include:
> Reading: develop a love of reading in your pupils, engaging them with a wide variety of texts and helping them to understand and think critically about increasingly complex material.
> Writing: develop pupils’ writing across imaginative and transactional texts, teaching them to devise scripts, essays, poetry and prose, with accuracy and flair.
> Spoken English: develop your pupils’ speaking skills in different contexts and for different purposes, making oracy central to their learning.
And lots more… English helps pupils find their voice and grow in both confidence and creativity. English forms the foundation for thriving in other subjects and is often key to succeeding both at school and in everyday life.
