Mentoring is a key part of our Early Career Training Programme. Early career teacher Gemma and her mentor Lisa take us behind the scenes of their mentoring session.

They share how focused, supportive mentoring sessions help new teachers build their confidence, develop expertise and share best practice across their school.

Watch the video to find out what a typical mentoring session looks like, and how it helps teachers keep getting better.

Early career teachers benefit from weekly mentoring in Year 1 and fortnightly in Year 2.

"We meet and we pick a subject that we need to focus on, go through all of the training videos and put a plan in place,” Gemma explains.

Lisa then conducts observations which are recorded in learning platform Steplab as video or audio. “We found that's really helped this year for us to be able to unpick it together afterwards,” she says.

Gemma shares how, together at their next meeting, they “go through all of that feedback and pick out what I've done so well and what I've not done so well to move forward with that.”

Mentoring isn’t just about looking for areas to develop, Steplab also enables mentors to shout out teachers’ successes as they grow, so they can build their confidence in their practice which translates into the classroom.
